Status Quo Bias in Large and Small Choice Sets∗

چکیده

This paper introduces models of status quo bias based on the concept of decision avoidance, by which a decision maker may select the status quo in order to avoid a difficult decision. These models capture the experimental finding that the status quo is more frequently chosen in larger choice sets. This phenomenon violates the predictions of current preference-based models of status quo bias that assume a decision maker with a fixed status quo will make consistent choices. Using laboratory experiments, I show that subjects in large choice sets do exhibit behavior in line with decision avoidance, while in small choice sets, preference-based models offer a better explanation of behavior. These findings raise questions for advocated policies of “benign paternalism.” ∗I would like to thank Andrew Caplin, Sheena Iyengar, Andrew Schotter and Efe Ok for the invaluable help they have provided during the course of this project. I would also like to thank John Remarek for his practical help, and Daniel Martin for his exceptional work in designing the experimental interface used in this paper. Finally, I would like to thank seminar participants at New York University for their valuable comments and encouragement. †Correspondence email: [email protected]

Is Status Quo Bias Consistent with Downward-sloping Demand?

By now, there is a large experimental literature showing some kind of status quo bias. If the subject is given a coffee mug (candy bar) and later given the possibility of trading it for a candy bar (coffee mug) of equal value, the subject is likely to stick with the original allocation (Knetsch, 1989). Here, we ask whether status quo bias can be made consistent with downward-sloping demand curv...

Limited attention and status quo bias

We introduce and axiomatically characterize a model of status quo bias in which the status quo affects choices by both changing preferences and focusing attention. The resulting Limited Attention Status Quo Bias model can explain both the finding that status quo bias is more prevalent in larger choice sets and that the introduction of a status quo can change choices between non-status quo alter...

Probabilistic dominance and status quo bias

Decision makers have a strong tendency to retain the status quo unless an alternative which may be a significant improvement comes along. This well-documented phenomenon is termed status quo bias. In many complicated choice problems governed by a status quo, decision makers consider alternatives that yield inferior outcomes in some criteria if they simultaneously yield improvements in a set of ...

Rational choice with status quo bias

Motivated by the empirical findings concerning the importance of one’s current situation on her choice behavior, the main objective of this paper is to propose a rational choice theory that allows for the presence of a status quo bias, and that incorporates the standard choice theory as a special case. We follow a revealed preference approach, and obtain two nested models of rational choice tha...

Designing a sequential choice architecture to reduce choice overload

Previous studies have demonstrated that a multitude of options can lead to choice overload, reducing decision quality. Through controlled experiments, we examine sequential choice architectures that enable the choice set to remain large while potentially reducing the effect of choice overload. A specific tournament-style architecture achieves this goal. An alternate architecture in which subjec...
